Residents Savor the Outdoors with Their Own Patios and Gardens at Quail Haven Village
September 13, 2023
Echoing the Green Acres TV theme song, Quail Haven Village, a senior rental community in Pinehurst, North Carolina, is “the place to be.” It offers land spreading out far and wide and a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors. That connection to fresh air, sun, rain and the natural world was just what Jan and Bob Carlson were searching to find. They moved in one year ago . Since then, Jan has been nurturing a garden on the patio outside their home.
Spacious Patios
The unique configuration of the independent living garden homes feature three or four apartments connected in approximately two dozen one-story self-standing buildings. Each apartment has a spacious patio. The couple had looked at many senior living communities before deciding to move to Quail Haven. One of the deciding factors was the patios.
“As soon as Bob saw these, along with the campus atmosphere here, he said, ‘This is it,’” Jan says. They’ve furnished their patio with chairs, pillows and a small rug. It is shaded by an awning that makes it comfortable during the day.
Private Oasis
Jan has decorated it with potted plants, perennials and two bird feeders. She states, “We like to sit outside and watch the birds. We spend more time outside, and I do more gardening than I’ve ever done before.” She also planted potted plants and then enlisted the help of the maintenance staff to plant the perennials. Getting help in her garden is only a matter of asking for it. “The cooperation here is great,” she says.
The couple also enjoys the other open spaces and greenery that are part of the greater community. “Our apartment is next to a huge expanse of grass. I call it the meadow,” Jan says.
The community features a walking trail that many of the residents use. Going seven times around the trail is the equivalent of walking a mile.
“So many people take advantage of it,” Jan says. “It’s a great way to exercise and enjoy the outdoors.”
There also is an outdoor bocce court for residents to use. “The garden residences are all one-story with no long hallways to navigate, says Lynn Valliere, director of sales and marketing at Quail Haven.
Multiple Floorplans
Floor plans vary in size from 520 square feet to more than 1,400 square feet. The community offers a variety of floor plans designed to suit anyone’s needs. According to Jan, moving to Quail Haven was a good decision for her and Bob. From planting flowers to watching birds flitting nearby, it’s opened up new hobbies and interests for them. “I’m so proud of my patio,” Jan gleems.
