Just Steps Away, Couple Keeps Their Love Alive at Quail Haven Village

The Millers have been sweethearts for 72 years and married for 66. Meet Annie and Bill Lewis. Always together,they continue to find comfort and companionship in their new home at Quail Haven Village.They are currently living only steps away from each other.

Transition Event
The couple, both 90, met when they were in high school. They had been living in a single-family home in North Carolina until about a year ago. That changed when Bill fell and injured himself. The fall initiated a move to Quail Haven Village for better care.
Bill initially received services in Quail Haven’s rehabilitation center. He later transitioned into assisted living. Of course, close proximity to Annie was of utmost importantance. She lived extremely near, in the independent living area.
“It takes about 100 steps to get from her door to his. This allows her to visit him one to three times daily,” says their son Timothy Lewis, who lives in Connecticut.
“The couple is able to share meals and do other activities together,” adds Lynn Valliere, sales and marketing director at Quail Haven Village.
Timothy visits his parents regularly. In between visits, he finds comfort in knowing that his parents are able to see each other frequently, even when he is not around. “It’s very important for my dad to see my mom. It comforts them both to know how the other is doing,” he says.
Peace of Mind
Dad’s move from rehabilitation to assisted living following his fall went very smoothly. It’s comforting knowing his parents will be cared for seamlessly, if and when their needs change, within the same community. “If anyone takes a wrong step, you don’t have to worry about them having to move to a new place,” he says.
The son continually praises Quail Haven for their flexibility in choices of care. For example , when they arranged for Annie Lewis to live in a temporary apartment. This facilitated a smoother transition , when her independent living apartment became available.
“The staff went into overdrive to help my parents get into a situation like this,” he says.
“They go out of their way to ensure this works for everyone.”
I’m also very pleased with the community’s amenities . The Independent living garden apartment home is perfect for his mother. With independence and safety as priorities, the apartments are all single-story and have a walk-in shower. Some even include a patio.
Bill Miller enjoys a private room in assisted living. His current needs are met while also optimizing his independence.
Living several states away, their son feels confident in knowing his parents are receiving the best care possible. “Quail Haven Village has been incredible for my peace of mind,” he says.
